Ivybridge is now the largest of the 4 South Hams market towns
with a population at the 2001 census of over 12,329. With its
transport links, proximity to Plymouth and good local facilities the
town has proved particularly attractive to families hence its
predominantly young population – at the 2001 census 17% of the
town’s population were under 16.

After some years of rapid growth the town has now settled down
and efforts are being concentrated on maintaining its unique
community spirit and improving local facilities still further.

Community-wide involvement and participation has become increasing important for the town; indeed Ivybridge has entered wholeheartedly into the government’s community regeneration programme for market towns. Under the auspices of the Market & Coastal Towns Initiative a comprehensive Community Action Plan has been developed to provide a “blue print” for Ivybridge’s improvement over the next 20 years.
