The Town Council's Open Spaces
The Town Council's chief physcial assets aside from The Watermark and Town Hall are its wonderful open spaces, details as follows -
• Allotment Gardens – the Park Street site offers 28 plots, the Woodlands site 34 plots and Filham Park over 100 plots. The Allotments are managed on behalf of the Town Council by the Ivybridge Allotments Association. The Association operates a waiting list for plots; application forms to join the waiting list are available from The Watermark Information Centre. Demand for allotments remains buoyant and the Association is actively seeking further allotment land. If you would like to join the Allotment Waiting List please click here to download an Application Form.
• Filham Park, off Godwell Lane – 34 acres of country park including a car park, cadet centre, allotments, cricket pitch and clubhouse plus a 2 acre fishing lake which is a magnet for both anglers and wildlife. Day passes are available for the lake from The Watermark Information Centre , Erme Court– or join the Plymouth & District Coarse Angling Club; Environment Agency Rod Licences are available from the Post Office in Glanville’s Mill precinct (telephone 01752 892623). This land was once part of the Filham Estate and some magnificent trees testify to its country house origins.
NB: close by (on private land) lies the old silver mine – rumour has it there is plenty of silver left but extraction is the biggest problem!
• Longtimber and Pithill Woods, off Station Road – a most beautiful 53 acres registered as Ancient Semi Natural Woodland (ASNW) with riverside pathways; the area is managed in a sympathetic and ecologically sound manner for the Town Council by Dartmoor National Park. Please click here to download a Town Council publication detailing the history and managementof these Woods plus a suggested "guided" walk .
• MacAndrews Field, off Exeter Road – around 2 acres for informal recreation equipped with seating; dog walkers to keep to the fenced perimeter only.
• Victoria Park, off Station Road – a lovely Victorian park of around 3 acres surrounded by mature trees and including a children’s play park, nature garden and youth shelter.
• Woodlands Cemetery
The cemetery at Woodlands is situated on an open site at the western end of the town, with far-reaching views to the Western Beacon.
The initial scheme for 1731 plots was laid out by the old Plympton St Mary Rural District Council. When Plympton was incorporated with Plymouth, ownership passed to the South Hams District Council and finally it was leased to Ivybridge Town Council in 1987 on an Agency Agreement, which is reviewed every 10 years.
The cemetery is divided into two sections and the first consecration took place in 1887. This was followed by further consecrations in 1944, 1954, 1984 and 1992. The old section of the cemetery houses two Chapels, one of which is still in use today for services, should it be required by any local families. The cemetery is also the base for the outside Maintenance Department.
The Town Hall staff do their very best to answer enquiries and to make all visitors welcome, whether they are bereaved or trying to research their family history. Please click here to view a copy of the Council's information leaflet on burials and other services at Woodlands Cemetery.
Significant recreational spaces in the town owned by South Hams District Council include -

• Leisure Centre Play Park – a modern, well equipped children’s play park with disabled access.
• Skate Park, Leonards Road Car Park – a popular and well equipped facility.
